A man who was wounded when police fired rubber bullets at protestors in Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape is said to be in critical condition in hospital.
Police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa, said about 100 people took to the streets on Tuesday morning in a protest about unemployment.
She said that they burnt tyres, damaging a road, and also set fire to four buildings, including two municipal buildings, causing extensive damage.
Captain Mawisa said police fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd and one man who was wounded was taken to hospital.
She said the case was transferred to Independent Police Investigative Directorate for investigation.
