Protest outside PE magistrates court

A Bangladeshi national is appearing in the Port Elizabeth magistrate's court on Monday in connection with the kidnapping of a Bangladeshi businessman.

The 39-year-old Kurshed Alam was arrested in Durban recently in connection with the abduction of 30-year-old business owner Ahmed Altab.

Police say the kidnappers had demanded a R1.5m ransom for his safe return.

Altab was held for more than three weeks at an abandoned warehouse in Durban before he was able to escape.

Police also believe the suspect is part of an international criminal syndicate targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.

A group of foreigners also held a protest outside the Port Elizabeth court where the suspect is appearing.
