Protest action shuts down Rhodes University

Grahamstown police are closely monitoring protest action at Rhodes University, where groups of students are barricading roads leading to the institution.

It is believed that they are protesting over increased fees for 2016.

Captain Mali Govender confirmed that the students are burning furniture on three roads, and emergency services are at the scene.

"Police in Grahamstown are closely monitoring the situation at Rhodes University. Students are barricading several roads" she said

Algoa FM News spoke to the online editor for the Rhodes newspaper 'Activate'

Mako Muzenda says students started protesting just after midnight.

She says nobody is quite sure who organised the protest as of yet. Their aim is to get the University to address issues of tuition.
