The SA Correctional Services Workers Union says two prison warders have been stabbed at St Albans prison outside Port Elizabeth.
Sacoswu regional spokesperson, Tony Plaaitjies, says the first incident took place on Friday and the second on Monday.
He says the union condemns these incidents and has demanded from Correctional Services management that shift patterns be changed in order address staff shortages at the Correctional Centre.
"At the cost of this whole thing is a shift pattern that has caused a chronic shortage of members. As well as in the Eastern Cape, members that go on pension, that resign and members who die, those posts just disappear from the post establishment and it contributes further to the unstable working conditions."
The Department of Correctional Services was not immediately available for comment late Monday afternoon.
