Free State police have confirmed that a 35-year-old woman has been murdered at the Goedemoed correctional facility in Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape.
Spokesperson, Sam Makhele says the incident happened on Friday afternoon when two female prison officials were held hostage by a 37-year old inmate.
He says according to information, the prisoner was busy with cleaning duties when he forced both officials into an office, where he locked himself in with them.
Makhele says prison authorities called on various teams, including the police to manage the situation.
He says after intervention by officials, they discovered the woman's body.
The surviving official was also allegedly raped by the inmate, who is now in police custody.
He will be charged with murder and rape.
