Preparations for DA congress "going well"

The country's official opposition party will have a new leader by the end of this weekend.

Close on one and a half thousand delegates will vote for a successor to outgoing DA leader, Helen Zille, at the party's federal congress in Nelson Mandela Bay which starts tomorrow.

The main contenders are DA parliamentary leader, Mmusi Maimane and Federal Chairperson, Wilmot James.
Two ordinary members are also contesting the top spot, Adrian Naidoo and Morgan Oliphant.

DA Eastern Cape leader, Atholl Trollip, is also vying for the position of Federal Chairperson.

Federal Chairperson, James Selfe, says preparations are going well at the International Convention Centre at the Boardwalk.

"The congress venue (ICC Boardwalk, PE) looks fantastic.  The delegates are starting to arrive in large numbers. The mood is very good, the people are excited and enthusiastic and I think we going to have a very fantastic congress," he said.

Meanwhile, Selfe said they learnt Thursday "that the SABC intends to renege on its commitment to cover the congress live."

He said following discussions with the head of news, the SABC is unwavering in its decision against agreements for live coverage.

However, speaking to Algoa FM News this morning, Selfe said that he's waiting for a call from SABC boss, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, on Friday morning on the situation.

He said the public broadcaster is supposed to cover all political points of view.

"We believe that our Congress is significant in the sense that there will be new leadership elected and for that reason the public broadcaster a duty to cover the congress in an equitable way and if it does not do so we will take whatever steps are necessary including court action," he added.
