Thieves have made off with valuable specimens from a new natural history exhibit at East London's museum following a break-in overnight.
Museum scientist, Kevin Cole, says the suspects gained access to the museum from the old entrance in Oxford Street that is not accessible to the public.
He told Algoa FM News that the thieves made off with specimens from a meteorite which are priceless.
"From a research point of view these artifacts are priceless and we had a nice little collection going from all over Africa. The particular one I am distraught about was a meteorite from Lesotho. In 202 this meteorite was actually seen by villagers as bits and pieces were falling so it was a witnessed fall. That is the kind of research, educational and entertainment value we put as a price to our specimens" he said
Cole says many meteorites contain up to 98 percent iron and was possibly stolen for financial gain.
