The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa has mooted the possibility of several network extensions in Buffalo City.
But, it has stressed that any decision will be based on the strength of the business case submitted.
In a recent presentation, Prasa said possible expansions included the extension of the current rail service beyond Berlin to King William’s Town.
It added that if the business case existed, Prasa would also consider a rail service between Mdantsane and East London's West Bank as well as a corridor between Vincent and Gonubie.
However, the rail agency said at this stage, the only definite extensions to the Eastern Cape rail network are that between Port Elizabeth and Motherwell, at a cost of R1.5 billion.
