Two Port Alfred school boys have been commended for rushing to the aid of a woman who got into difficulty at West Beach on Wednesday.
The teens, Nathan Austin and Kyle Lax, both learners at Port Alfred High, were praised for their bravery by Port Aflred Cluster Commander, Brigadier Morgan Govender.
Govender was in uniform on the beach today when he was approached by a teenager who reported that his mother was in difficulty in the surf.
According to a police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, all emergency services were alerted while Nathan and Kyle had approached them to offer to help.
She said the boys grabbed their boogie boards and flippers and swam out to where the woman was floating on her back in the water.
“They reached the victim who could still be seen from the beach. The two boys stayed with the victim until the NSRI,” she said.
Govender said the NSRI retrieved the woman from the water and rushed her to shore.
She said the woman, believed to be a visitor from Gauteng, was later transported to hospital in Port Elizabeth in a serious but stable condition.
