A local surfer from Port Alfred had a narrow escape on Wednesday morning when he was bitten on the leg by what appears to have been a juvenile Great White Shark while surfing off Port Alfred's East Beach.
The NSRI's Craig Lambinon says the Ndlambe Municipality has closed the beach until further notice.
He urged bathers in the area to be extra vigilant.
The local surfer, in his early twenties, was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
A cautionary advisory is issued by Ndlambe Municipality for bathers and paddlers to be aware of this incident and to exercise caution around the coastline of Port Alfred.
Beaches will be closed until further notice as a safety precaution.
