Port Elizabeth police saying they're viewing the continued attacks on cyclists in the Metro in an extremely serious light and will do everything they can to catch the perpetrators.
In the latest incident, popular Port Elizabeth triathlete Luvuyo Bangazi was attacked on Heugh Road between 9th and 10th avenue shortly after five o'clock on Saturday morning.
Police Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg confirmed that a case had been opened at Walmer Police Station and appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
Bangazi, who is the Communications spokesperson for the Mandela Bay Development Agency, and does a lot of work with development triathletes in the Metro, posted a photograph of himself on facebook sporting a heavily bandaged right forearm, following injuries sustained in the attack.
He described how two thugs had come at him with a thick, heavy log and robbed him of his cellphone and his favourite bicycle.
Bangazi said the trauma was unimaginable and that he was sad - but glad to be alive.
He concluded by adding that Nelson Mandela Bay is still the best place to train, race and live a healthy lifestyle and that we cannot allow thugs to steal that from us.
A visibly upset Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip condemned the attack on Bangazi at the Sport Elizabeth publication's Homegrown Hero Awards on Saturday night.
Mayor Trollip, who himself went to the aid of a fellow cyclist in a similar attack on the Schoenmakerskop Road last year, said reducing unemployment was critical in bringing down crime in the Metro.
