The Public Order Policing Unit (POPS) in Nelson Mandela Bay was deployed early on Friday morning when residents of Joe Slovo, Kwadwesi started blocking the R75.
Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says residents are reportedly unhappy about service delivery issues, particularly related to their electricity demands.
He said they barricaded the Uitenhage Road with burning tyres and rubble.
Beetge says various locations along the R75 was blocked and extra policing units from surrounding stations have been deployed.
He says although the R75 is open it's still advisable to avoid that road if at all possible.
Protesters remain in the area and are awaiting the arrival of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Councillors to address them.
Motorists are requested to use alternative routes between Gqeberha, Kariega, and Despatch.
