The Volkswagen Polo, produced at the company's Kariega plant, is one of three vehicle models mostly involved in fatal crashes in the country.
And, according to the findings of a baseline study released on Thursday by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the Polo, Toyota Hilux and Toyota Quantum, also accounted for the highest number of speed infringement fines issued.
The RTMC says the baseline study was published last month and analysed fatal crash data from the First of October 2017 to the 30th of June 2021, spanning 3.8 years.
It says a total of 48 330 vehicles were involved in 37 583 fatal crashes, resulting in 45 232 deaths during that period.
RTMC spokesperson, Simon Zwane, says an analysis of the top 20 vehicle models involved in fatal crashes showed that the top three accounted for 43.2% of the fatal crashes, with the Polo being involved in 16.7% of the total.
He says they did not go out with a pre-conceived idea to identify particular vehicles as this was just a baseline study to understand which vehicles are involved in most of the accidents against the driving population of the country.
