Political rivalry in the Sterkstroom in the Eastern Cape boiled over on Tuesday leading to an attack on the home of the mayor of the Inkwanca Municipality, Luleka Ghubula.
According to police the home former mayor Mthandazo Qamngwana, was also torched as supporters of the two clashed in the streets of the town at around lunch-time on Tuesday.
Three houses in total were attacked and set alight.
Police spokesperson, Lietuenant Namhla Mdleleni, says six people, aged between 26 and 37, were arrested and will appear in court on Friday.
She says a 35-year-old who discharged his firearm in the direction of a rival group faces a charge of attempted murder while the others have been charged with malicious damage to property.
Mdleleni says police are maintaining a heavy presence in the town which remains tense.
