A sergeant from the Kabega Park police station in Port Elizabeth was arrested for allegedly using a police vehicle without permission.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says on Friday three women were robbed of their handbags and personal belongings at the traffic lights in Ngunga Street in Motherwell.
She says it was later established that a police vehicle was involved in the robbery.
Four suspects were arrested at a petrol station in Motherwell.
Naidu says it was later established that the 37-year old sergeant failed to book in his vehicle when he went off duty on Friday.
Provincial Commission Luietenant Liziwe Ntshinga says police officials who associate themselves with criminals will be harshly dealt with.
Further charges against the Sergeant may be added.
