Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa says the number of suicides among police officers paints a bleak picture.
He says there were 34 suicides from January to June this year.
Mthethwa made the remark at a suicide prevention summit in Pretoria.
He said the number had forced the police to examine its systems to deal with police trauma.
The minister said poor financial management, personal trauma, and mental health issues were among the leading causes of suicides.
He urged officers to seek professional counselling and support services, which were freely available to them.
