A Police Sergeant from Waldrift, Vereeniging was killed on her way to work on Tuesday night.
Spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidu says the 40-year-old female officer was picked up by two colleagues just after 7 PM and were on their way to report for duty.
He says as they were travelling, they noticed something suspicious happening at a car standing in front of a house.
Brigadier Naidu says it appeared to them as if someone was trying to force a person into the boot of a car.
The police reversed their car and moments later shots were fired in their direction.
The female officer who was sitting at the back of the vehicle was struck by a bullet in the back of her head.
The driver immediately rushed to hospital where his colleague passed on.
Police have launched a 72-hour action plan to find the killer.
