A police Sergeant attached to the Public Order Police Unit (POPS) in Gqeberha has died following a head-on collision on the R102.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says 42-year-old Sergeant Thomas Nemalangeni was off duty and driving in his Toyota Etios towards Jeffreys Bay on Thursday when the accident happened.
She says a Jeep Cherokee and a Mitsubishi bakkie were headed in the opposite direction on the R102 when it collided with the Etios.
It is alleged that the road was wet and could have played a part in the accident.
Colonel Naidu says Sergeant Nemalangeni died on impact.
She says the driver in the Mitsibushi bakkie was transported to a hospital in Gqeberha with severe injuries while the driver of the Jeep Cherokee sustained minor injuries.
A case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene extended her condolences to the Nemalangeni family.
She cautioned motorists to be alert and to reduce the speed limit when driving, especially during rainy and inclement weather.
"There are many potholes that have opened up due to the heavy rainfall experienced in some parts of the Eastern Cape. Huge water puddles on the road make it difficult to spot. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved Sergeant’s family," added Lt Gen Mene.
