Police search and rescue teams have recovered the body of a young Eastern Cape scholar who got swept away while trying to cross a river at Mount Fletcher.

The 8-year-old Esona Ntsima was the last of six victims to be found in the water.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, said his body was found by community members nearly 80km away from the original drowning site.

Police expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the support received from the community throughout the ordeal.

The ANC in the Eastern Cape said it had directed all spheres of government to give the families of the learners all the necessary support.
