Members of the Mount Road policing cluster in Port Elizabeth have arrested a suspected kingpin in an elaborate fraud scheme following an investigation lasting several months.
Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says that in June, security at the Edgars Retail Chain arrested 31 year-old Daniele Whiteboy after they were red flagged that he used a fraudulant ID Document to open an account.
Van Rensburg says Whiteboy told Mount Road detectives that he had been approached by a Mr Jordaan in Kwazakhele to open the Edgars account. His job was to then buy cellphones from the retailer on the account - for which he would receive a R400 payment as a service fee.
Van Rensburg says police obtained a search warrant and arrested a 34 year-old Zimbabwean National, hiding in the ceiling of a house in Kwazakhele on Thursday night.
A number of fake ID documents were found on the premises and seized as evidence.
The suspect will appear in court on Monday and Van Rensburg says police are hoping to make more arrests.
