At least 45 suspected criminals were arrested for various offences during intense high visibility patrols around King Williams Town in Eastern Cape over the weekend, police said.
In a statement on Tuesday police said the suspects aged between of 20 and 57 were arrested for crimes ranging from possession of drugs, common robbery, drunkenness, theft and common assault.
“A 30-year-old suspect was arrested for dealing in drugs after he was found in possession of 25 bags of tik and an undisclosed amount of cash in Henry Street,” police said.
“Thirteen of these suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. All the suspects will appear in the King Williams Town Magistrate’s Court soon.”
In another development, the fight against crime was boosted last week when four passing-out parades for newly trained police constables were held after they completed the Basic Police Development Learning Programme.
The 4,941 constables were trained at four South African Police Service (SAPS) academies – Tshwane in Gauteng, Philippi in the Western Cape, Bisho, Eastern Cape and Chatsworth in KwaZulu-Natal.
The newly trained constables will be deployed at police stations, where they will perform operational duties for 12 months as part of their practical in-service training.
