The Mdantsane Cluster Task Team intercepted four suspects before they could execute an armed robbery at a well-known retail store in Cambridge, East London, on Friday night.
Police captain Nkosikho Mzuku says members followed up on intelligence information received and pounced on the suspects.
Police confiscated a 7,65 mm pistol with 4 rounds of ammunition, 5 cellphones and a white Toyota Tazz.
The suspects will appear in the East London Magistrate's Court next week on charges of attempted armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and suspected stolen property.
Mdantsane Cluster Commander Major General Henry Vos, commended the team for displaying a high level of tactical awareness and preventing a crime from happening.
