Police fire rubber bullets in PE protest

Police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse Walmer Township residents who were stoning vehicles on Heugh Road on Monday morning.

Port Elizabeth police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans, says residents began burning tyres and barricading the road between 8th and 11th Avenue at around 4-30am.

The protest is related to ongoing electricity complaints.

Protests flared up two weeks ago when the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality began disconnecting illegal power connections.

Ward councillor Nomajama Benya, says Walmer Township residents are fed up because the issue has been dragging on for a long time.
