Police escort Dept Min from ANC office in PE

The Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Mcebisi Skwatsha was reportedly held against his will at the Nelson Mandela Bay ANC Headquarters in Govan Mbeki Avenue on Saturday morning.

Police spokesperson Sandra Janse van Rensburg dismissed suggestions that it was a hostage situation and said that no case had been opened with the police by the ANC.

She confirmed. however, that the Deputy Minister had been escorted back to his hotel by the Public Order Policing Unit.

It's understood that about 70 people had prevented Deputy Minister Skwatsha from leaving the office.

An ANC spokesperson in Nelson Mandela Bay said that the Deputy Minister is a member of their National Executive Committee.

He said Skwatsha is in Nelson Mandela Bay to deal with issues arising in ANC branches as they prepare for the party’s upcoming provincial congress.

The provincial congress will inform the position of the ANC in the Eastern Cape at the governing party’s much-awaited December congress.
