Police in Joubertina came under attack from a large group of residents after two people were arrested and hundreds of litres of an illegal brew were confiscated.
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, said the incident happened on Friday evening in Louterwater when members were following up on information about a home-made brew being sold from a house.
He said police arrested two people, aged 30 and 44, and confiscated over 300 litres of the illicit brew.
“It is further alleged that while members were about to leave the scene, a group of over 100 people attacked the police with stones inflicting costly damages to the police vehicle. Fortunately, no person was injured during the incident,” Tonjeni said.
He said after reinforcements were called in, nine people, five women, and four men were arrested on charges of public violence. They are due to appear in court on Monday.
Damage to the police vehicle is estimated to be around R50 000.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga condemned the attack on the police while executing their duties.
