Violent Protests in Kwadwesi in Nelson Mandela Bay on Thursday led to several interventions by the police.
Captain Andre Beetge says during the early hours of the morning. protestors blocked the M14 road at Izinyoka, Kwadwesi leading to Kleinskool, as well as the R75 (Uitenhage Road).
They were unhappy at the demolishing of new housing structures at Izinyoka next to the M14 by the Nelson Mandela Metro land invasion team assisted by Metro Police.
A public violence case was opened by police after they were pelted with stones by angry residents.
A group of about 200 to 300 protesters demanded to be addressed by Municipal Councillors and by 11 am public order police needed to use a water canon, stun grenades and rubber rounds to disperse the group and stabilise the area next to the M14.
Beetge says one police member was injured when he was hit by a rock.
By one pm, a Metro team arrived to continue the demolishing of the illegal structures.
A further case of damaging of infrastructure was opened for the burning of tyres on the M14 road
The Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie said they're expecting to make arrests soon as they cannot allow roads to be damaged in this way as it puts the lives of road users in danger.
