Plans to establish NMMU as premier maritime university

Wednesday's planned signing of a memorandum of understanding on maritime studies at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, was postponed at the last moment.

The CEO of the SA Maritime Safety Authority, Tsietsi Mokhele, says those concerned, have agreed that they want to elevate the event to a higher level and that the signing will now take place in London next month.

The NMMU is set to become South Africa's premier maritime university, in terms of the planned agreements and memorandum.

Mokhele explains...

"What happened was that the memorandum of understanding was ready to be signed but on further engagements we then discovered there is a much bigger opportunity. So we then said we will move the signing to London which will happen in June. We should then elevate it even above the University itself that the Secretary of the UN agency will then co-sign with the minister of Transport in South Africa"
