National Police Commissioner General Riah Phiyega will be launching a programme for school safety in Bhisho on Friday.
Lieutenant Colonel Sibongile Soci says the “Safer Schools in the Eastern Cape” programme is part of the Provincial Community Outreach Programme.
Soci says the programme is part of a collaborative partnership between the Department of Basic Education and SAPS to curb crime at schools.
She adds that the programme aims to link all schools with local police stations and establish functional Safe School Committees.
Soci says the programme will also establish reporting systems on school based crime and violence - and regular crime awareness sessions.
Eastern Cape premier Noxolo Kiviet, education MEC Mandla Makupula and safety MEC Helen Sauls-August will also attend the launch.
