Petrol tanker overturns near Peddie

Supplied

A clean-up operation is underway on the road between Makhanda and Peddie after a fuel tanker, filled with diesel overturned on Wednesday.

The Eastern Cape Transport Department says the crash occurred shortly after 6 am.

Spokesperson, Makhaya Komisa says the driver allegedly lost control after experiencing a slippery substance on the road while approaching a curve.

No one was injured in the accident which led to traffic being disrupted on the by-pass road.

Meanwhile, the truck's owner, Shaun Murphy, of East Cape Fuels says fortunately workers from the WBHO construction company were on site due to ongoing construction in the area.

He says they swiftly responded with machinery, graders, bulldozers and TLBs and put out containment bins to get traffic flowing.

Murphy expressed his gratitude as the environmental impact was negated as far as possible.

A case of reckless and negligent driving would be opened at Peddie Saps for further investigations as the content affects various stakeholders like environmental affairs
