Pension money stolen in four EC heists

Several robbery gangs are on the loose in the Eastern Cape following four incidents overnight targetting pension money.

Authorities confirmed that in the past 24 hours armed gangs robbed the Adelaide and Cala Post Offices while two cash-in-transit heists were reported en route to Nqamakhwe and Elliotdale.

Luzuko Qina of the SA Social Security Agency in the Eastern Cape says that in all these incidents undisclosed amounts of money was taken.

He told Algoa FM News that no one was injured even though the gang who robbed the Adelaide Post Office, accosted the postmaster in his home on Thursday night.

"What happened was that those who robbed the Adelaide Post Office went to the home of the postmaster and demanded the keys and security codes for the safe.  They tied him up in her home and went to the Post Office, got all the that was in the safe and left with it."

"Then later on the postmaster reported the matter to the police, having been saved.  So the robbery was successful. But all of the beneficiaries are receiving their payments through other means, like ATM's, retail stores and the like."

Johan Kruger of the South African Post Office confirmed the Adelaide break-in but said customers were able to access pension payments using ATM's and supermarkets outlets.
