PE woman killed in bee-attack

Port Elizabeth police have confirmed that a 55-year old woman was stung to death by a swarm of bees on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesperson, Captain Johan Rheeder says the unidentified woman was found on the corner of Matthew and Francisco street in Charlo.

He says according to a security company patrolling the area, she was already dead at the time of their arrival.

Rheeder says it is alleged that she was walking near the railway line when the incident happened.

Police have opened up an inquest docket.

Meanwhile, a local bee expert, Hein Sharp, says the phenomenon of bees stirring and becoming active is totally dependent on temperature.

He also says that Spring is around the corner and bees also take full advantage of this time to multiply their hives and grow their colonies.

Sharp told Algoa FM News that the main thing in people being stung is that it was likely that the hive had been interfered with.

"In our experience the bees become very temperamental when the space that the colony occupies is short in other words the hive is full and they become very possessive of their brood and honey. One must be very careful not to approach a nest like this" he said.
