Police in Port Elizabeth have opened an inquest docket after a 64-year-old woman was killed by her dog.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says Belinda Jonker was mauled to death by her four-year-old pitbull on Monday evening.
She says Jonker and her husband who lives in Morningside, were leaving the house when she struggled to get into the car.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says whilst her husband was busy assisting her, their pit bull attacked her.
She says the husband tried to get the dog off his wife and eventually called on neighbours who helped him to tie the animal to a tree.
Jonker sustained several wounds and died on the scene.
The dog was removed from the scene by the Animal Cruelty League.
