PE woman jailed for concealing gang member's firearm

A Port Elizabeth woman has been jailed for an effective six years following her conviction on a charge of the illegal possession of a firearm.Twenty-two-year-old Candice Nel was arrested after concealing a firearm given to her by a gang suspect that police had been pursuing in Voissen Street in Gelvandale last July.

Nel, whom police said had affiliations to the Upstand Dogs gang, was jailed earlier this week.Meanwhile PE police has issued a warning to the public not to intefere with police in the execution of their duties.

This after two policemen, who were in hot pursuit of a gang suspect in Voissen Road in Gelvandale, were stoned by members of the community. The policemen, who were on foot, sustained injuries and the suspect managed to get away.

Police Spokesperson Kolonel Priscilla Naidu said" Attacks on the police will under no circumstances be tolerated. There is no justification whatsoever for this type of conduct by members of the community. The SAPS will act decisively within the parameters of the law when subjected to attack. Police officials are working tirelessly to bring safety and stability to the communities of Bethelsdorp and Gelvandale and to be attacked by that very community is extremely disappointing. "
