A 57-year-old woman and her 5-year-old granddaughter were killed while crossing the N2 freeway near Motherwell in Port Elizabeth on Friday.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge said the accident occurred when the 37-year-old driver of a white Volkswagen Golf ploughed into them at the Markman turnoff into Motherwell just after 8 am.
He said the impact of the accident killed them both instantly.
Beetge said the elderly woman's 62-year-old husband was also walking with them and was not injured in the accident.
He said a culpable homicide case has been opened at the Swartkops police station.
