Port Elizabeth police arrested a suspect wanted for the murder of a 24-year-old man in Helenvale last month.
Members of Gelvandale's Tracing Team arrested Darren-Lee Whitebooi, nearly a month after he allegedly shot and killed 24-year-old Chester Williams.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the members spotted him in Martin Street in Gelvandale at around lunch-time on Wednesday after a warrant for his arrest was issued.
She said he fled into a shack at the back of a house where he was arrested.
Police said earlier that he and two other men allegedly kidnapped Williams in Fitchard Street in Helenvale on 13 December.
She said friends of his approached them and begged them to release him because he was not involved in any gang activity.
Naidu said Williams was able to free himself and fled while his friends were negotiating with the suspects.
"Darren Lee Whitebooi fired several shots at the fleeing Williams. He was shot multiple times and died on the scene," she said.
He is due to appear in court on Friday.
