A 36-year-old Port Elizabeth man has been arrested minutes after hijacking a 25-year-old woman of her Volkswagen Polo in the city's Northern Areas.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says the victim is believed to have dropped off a friend in Soudien Street in Bloemendal when she was accosted by three unknown men who forced her door open and drove off before 11 pm on Wednesday.
Naidu says just after the incident occurred she flagged down anti-gang unit members who were patrolling the area and drove off with them in search of the vehicle.
She says they spotted her car in George Botha Drive and after a chase ensued the suspects lost control and drove into a railing before firing several shots towards the police.
Two of them managed to escape, while one of the men sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.
He will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates Court soon on charges of hijacking and attempted murder.
