The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's safety and security directorate has set a target of 10 traffic fines being issued a day by each traffic officer and to increase revenue collected from traffic fines by 60%.
The target is listed as of one of the Key Performance Indicators in the Metro’s Integrated Development Plan for 2012/13.
The Directorate has come under fire at Municipal Public Accounts Committee meetings with respect to its productivity levels in issuing and collecting of fines, compared to other local authorities.
The metro's Budget and Treasury directorate has also singled out the collection of traffic fines as one of the areas where revenue can be enhanced and in so doing improve the municipality’s cash flow position.
