PE teen dies in beachfront stabbing

A Port Elizabeth teenager has died after being stabbed on the city's beachfront.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said that police were alerted "at about 05:45" on Sunday to a body lying on the beachfront.

She said that "17-year-old Curtly Alexander, from Palmridge in Bethelsdorp, had sustained a stab wound to the chest."

"Circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing is unknown at this stage and a case of murder is being investigated by Humewood detectives," Naidu said.

"Anyone who can assist police in their investigation is asked to contact D/Constable Lepan at SAPS Humewood," she said.

Thousands of people, mostly youths, flocked to the city's beachfront on Saturday night for the annual opening of the season festivities.

The head of Safety and Security in Nelson Mandela Bay, John Best, said: "although very saddened by this death, the full operational plan ended at 2.30am Sunday, and by then there were no reports of any stabbings."

"The majority of the operational staff had gone off duty at 3 am, but there was still staff stationed to patrol the beaches.  But the event was officially called off at 03h00 hours this morning."

"This is very tragic," Best said.
