Tributes are pouring in on social media for popular Grey High School teacher Vaughan Jones who died on Tuesday of a suspected heart attack while surfing at Rincon near the beacon.
Sixty Three year-old Jones was an English teacher and house master and had been at Grey for more than 20 years.
Grey High School rector Neil Crawford sent his sincere condolences to Jones' wife and children and said a mentor to so many would be sorely missed.
"I sat in his classroom just the other day listening to one of his lessons and was once again taken by the warmth and wonderful way in which he interacted with his classes. The boys are going to be devastated, no doubt about that" he said.
