A Port Elizabeth taxi driver is due in court on Wednesday for cramming 47 school children into his 16-seater vehicle.
Metro Police Chief, Yolanda Faro, said the 26-year-old driver has been in custody since his arrest on Tuesday.
She said that Metro Police members were patrolling in Chase Drive in Young Park when one of the officers noticed that the Toyota Quantum mini-bus travelling in the opposite direction was overloaded.
Faro said the officers turned around and chased after the taxi before pulling it over for an inspection.
"The Metro Police officer then approached the driver, introduced himself and stated the reason for the stop. On inspection of the vehicle, his suspicion was confirmed that the vehicle was indeed overloaded with school kids sitting literally on top of each other," she said.
A video shows dozens of children exiting the minibus.
The learners from Frank Joubert Primary School were later transported to school in the same vehicle in three trips.
Faro appealed to drivers transporting children to refrain from overloading, emphasising the risks in the event of an accident.
She has also appealed to parents not to allow their children to get into overloaded vehicles.
