An Eastern Cape taxi driver has been arrested for allegedly transporting 40 school children in a minibus with a seating capacity of 14.
Kouga Municipality spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall says the minibus was transporting the children from Quagga Primary School and was stopped by Kouga traffic officials on the R331 near Patensie.
The driver, from Port Elizabeth, was taken to the local police station where he was arrested and charged for overloading his vehicle, not having a driver's licence, transporting school children at a fee without having an operating licence and in a vehicle that does not comply with the necessary safety requirements, as there was no fire extinguisher.
The driver is expected to appear in the Hankey Magistrate's Court on Friday.
