PE tavern owner arrested hours before lockdown

A tavern owner from Kwazakhele in Port Elizabeth is in police custody following his arrest on Thursday night for operating after the 6 pm deadline.

A spokesperson for the Metro Kupido Baron says this is in direct contravention of regulation 8 in terms of the regulations passes under the conditions regulating the national state of disaster.

He says the Metro police officers were busy with random compliance inspections, in terms of the Covid-19 regulations and arrested the owner at 9.30 pm.

Until Thursday alcohol was allowed to be sold until 6 pm, but the country is now in a nationwide lockdown for 21 days in which the sale and transport of alcohol is banned.

The tavern owner is being held in the Kwazakhele police station and will appear in court soon.
