A 23-year-old student from Nelson Mandela University is expected to make his second appearance in court on Thursday on a charge of murder.
Athenkosi Zenani was charged with murder after killing a knife-wielding suspect who allegedly tried to rob him of his cell phone.
According to police Zenani was approached by two men in the early hours of a Sunday morning in November last year.
It is alleged that the student managed to grab the knife from the suspect, before stabbing him to death.
The second suspect ran away from the scene and was later arrested by a private security guard who was on patrol.
Zenani was granted bail of R500 and was ordered to stay at his parent's house in East London until the University re-opens.
The victim was identified as a foreign national.
