Police in Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth, have opened an attempted murder docket after a five year old boy was shot and wounded in the foot by his father, who's a member of the SA National Defence Force.
Police Warrant Officer, Thembi Gwe, says the man and his wife were allegedly arguing when he threatened to shoot her.
She says the soldier drew his fire-arm and a shot went off, wounding the child.
Gwe says the mother fled to the neighbours who alerted the police.
The child is being treated in hospital.
By late Thursday night, police were still searching for the soldier.
