Police have launched a manhunt for a suspect involved in a robbery and shooting incident in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday night where a police sergeant was killed.
According to police a couple was robbed and tied up by two armed men in their house in Chimaera Street in Kuyga.
The suspects, who had masks on, stole the complainants Nissan NP200, a TV set and their phones.
The couple soon managed to untie themselves and rushed to an off-duty police officer who lived on their street.
The officer immediately made contact with radio control to alert them about the stolen bakkie.
A police sergeant and his partner spotted the vehicle in the vicinity of Mission Road and gave chase.
National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidu says one of the men fired several shots at the 44-year-old Sergeant Miniyake Kolela, killing him instantly.
The suspects abandoned the bakkie and fled on foot.
Kolela's partner, a Warrant Officer, pursued the passenger who ran in the direction of Aspen Heights.
The driver, who fired the shots, was spotted by another police vehicle which gave chase.
The 47-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested and police also confiscated a firearm with the serial numbers filed off.
The stolen bakkie, plus a variety of other stolen items including a television set and cellular phones which were taken during the earlier robbery were also recovered.
A 72-hour activation plan was launched to find the second suspect.
