Two security guards were shot and wounded in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says the guards were driving in an unmarked white Isuzu bakkie and stopped in Ross Street, New Brighton to pick up a third member shortly before 5 am.
He says when the bakkie stopped an unknown armed suspect walked up to the passenger side and opened fire on the two guards.
The 39-year-old driver was shot in the left side of his chest and is in a critical condition in hospital while his 35-year-old passenger sustained a gunshot wound in the left leg.
The shooter fled the scene in an unknown vehicle.
Beetge says the third guard, who was being picked up, heard the shots from inside his house and immediately called the police, before rushing outside to assist his colleagues.
Two cases of attempted murder are under investigation.
No arrests have been made.
