PE security guard shot dead for an empty money box

A Port Elizabeth security guard has been shot and killed for an empty money box.

Police spokesperson, Captain Johan Rheeder says a G4S security guard in his 40's was fatally wounded in NU1 in Motherwell at lunch time on Thursday.

He sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head while his colleague was  wounded in the arm when they were attacked by a gang of at least five armed robbers who targetted the money box they were carrying.

Captain Rheeder says that around 1 pm, the two security guards exited a bank at a shopping centre in Ngonyama Road while the third guard waited in their vehicle.

It was then that the gang struck, opening fire on the guards walking towards their van.

One of the security guard's firearm was taken as well as the empty money box.

The suspects fled in different directions and are believed to have made their escape in at least three vehicles.

Two of the vehicles, a Toyota Quantam and a Datsun Go were recovered in the area. Police are still searching for a green Mazda.

Police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery and no arrests have yet been made.
