PE schools demand security in gang plagued suburbs

Four schools in Port Elizabeth Northern areas plagued by gang violence have raised security concerns with the Eastern Cape Department of Education.

While learners marched against the violence, principals from Helenvale Primary, Bayview, Hillcrest and Gelvandale High School, met with education officials on Wednesday to discuss ways of implementing security measures at schools.

In May learners and teachers at Helenvale Primary School were left traumatised when a man being pursued by police ran into a packed classroom.

School Principal Malcolm Roberts says the only possible solution is for security officers to be based at the schools.

"Those 4 schools were given a chance to highlight what is happening at schools. We are looking at possible solutions. The only solution we came up with is that they give us two security officers to start working in May. Our concern is what will happen between now and the 1st of May" he said
