PE's 'mob justice dad' remains in custody

The case of the 36-year-old Port Elizabeth father facing a charge of murder after allegedly killing a man whom he thought had raped his 7-year-old daughter, has been remanded to the 7th of February for the accused to appoint a private attorney

The dramatic scenes unfolded late on Saturday evening in Motherwell when it was suspected that 52-year-old Mava Fundakubi raped the little girl.

The accused who remains in custody handed himself over to the police on Tuesday after it was established that no rape took place.

Police Spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says the accused told police that he fetched the deceased from his home in De Vos Crescent, before assaulting him in the street, with the help of other community members.

The 36-year-old Simphiwe Yanta remains in custody and the State is opposing bail.

Beetge says police will be meeting with members of the community at 5 pm to urge them to come forward with information and to not take the law into their own hands again.
