A Port Elizabeth policeman is in the intensive care unit of a local hospital after being wounded in the head during a shoot-out between gang-unit members and suspects in Helenvale.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, said members in police vehicles were conducting operations at about 9.45 pm on Thursday night when they spotted a vehicle in Kobus Road.
He told Algoa FM News that the gang unit members followed the Silver VW Polo and when the occupants of the car spotted the police they sped off.
"A high-speed chase ensued followed by a shoot-out in which a 33-year-old Constable was shot and wounded in the head before he could alight from the police vehicle," Naidoo said.
"His colleagues returned fire and the suspects aged between 20 and 28, were subsequently arrested and detained on a charge of attempted murder," he added.
They are due to appear in court soon.
